Hello friends,
Big thanks to you all for tuning in. I have some fun shows coming up this month, hope to see you somewhere! Special thanks to everyone who has joined the paid tier of Grapefruit Moon – starting this month, the musical exploration side of things is available only to paid subscribers (keeping it at a very chill $5). It’s been deeply fun and illuminating putting that section together, so I hope you’ll consider coming along for the ramble. This month we’re looking at some Appalachian fiddle music in conversation with a Bach partita.
Here’s where you can catch me through the end of this month:
2.16 // Matt Gold and Dustin Laurenzi at Consignment Lounge (Chicago)
Dustin and I have been making duo music lately for saxophone/synths (him) and electric bass/drum machine (me). I adore this project and Consignment Lounge is really the perfect place to hear it.
2.20 // John Christensen Quartet at Transfer Pizza (Milwaukee)
Playing John’s gorgeous tunes with John (bass), Dustin Laurenzi (saxophone), Devin Drobka (drums), and myself (guitar).
2.26 // Matt Gold and Storms of Love at Simon’s Tavern (Chicago)
My every-other-month bar band rides again, playing two sets of old school country/soul/R&B hits and deep cuts to dance/cry to. Gus Martini (bass), Quin Kirchner (drums), and myself (guitar).
2.27 // Grazyna Auguscik at Copernicus Center (Chicago)
Always a delight playing with singer Grazyna Auguscik – this time as part of her annual Chopin in the City festival. The band features Greg Ward (saxophone), Ben Lewis (piano), Matt Ulery (bass), Quin Kirchner (drums), and myself (guitar), plus special guest vocalists Urszula Dudziak and Dee Alexander.
2.28 // Greg Ward’s Rogue Parade at Chicago Jazz Fair (Chicago)
This band is beyond dear to me, and brings the heat every single time we play. Greg Ward (saxophone), Dave Miller (guitar), Matt Ulery (bass), Quin Kirchner (drums), and myself (guitar).
2.28 // Sidepieces at the Hungry Brain (Chicago)
After the Rogue Parade set, I’ll be scooting over to the Hungry Brain to play in the house band for this monthly gig of casual country covers, featuring a revolving door of guest singers.
Ok, moving on to some musical tinkering below (If you’re on the fence about joining the paid tier, you can check out January’s newsletter where I’ve made this section free):
